A True Story about the Effect of Service – Good and Bad

Years ago, there was a shopping center across the street from my office. Immediately next door to each other were a Dry Cleaner and a Shoe Repair store.

I took some dress shirts to the dry cleaner, where the owner greeted me with a BIG “Hello, Mr. Lewis. So glad to see you.” When I went to pick them up, there were burn holes and missing buttons on two of the shirts. I presented that to the owner, and she was overboard apologetic, insisting on paying for the shirts. She really cared.

I took a pair of dress shoes to the shoe repair store. That owner was dismissive and uncaring. I needed the shoes back reasonably soon, but was told it would be two weeks. When I begged for earlier, he simply repeated ‘two weeks, two weeks’. Unlike the dry cleaner, he did a great job – the shoes were seriously better than I expected. But he was miserable.

Because of the service, I never wanted to go to a different dry cleaner – the experience was just too good. Who cares about the shirt – it did not happen all the time. On the other hand, I began driving an extra several miles to a different shoe repair shop – I just did not want my day ruined by that guy.
